About Alex...
My interest in architecture began long before I knew it could become a profession. As a child I loved building with Lego, drawing, painting and making things with my hands. As I grew older, that curiosity found new outlets, from designing virtual playgrounds in game map editors to eventually studying real buildings. Looking back, they were all expressions of the same fascination: understanding how thoughtful design shapes the way we experience a place.
I've always been drawn to buildings that quietly improve people's lives, places that balance beauty with practicality, and craftsmanship with everyday living. From the timeless proportions of classical architecture, to the character of London's historic streets, to the possibilities offered by contemporary digital design, I believe the best buildings are those that continue to enrich people's lives for decades to come.
I completed my architectural education in the United Kingdom, studying in Leicester for undergraduate and Cardiff for postgraduate level before qualifying as an architect through the UK's professional route back near my home turf in Birmingham. Along the way I worked on residential, regeneration and conservation projects, developing a particular appreciation for the challenges and opportunities presented by existing buildings.
After completing my professional qualification, I left my AJ100 job in central london and founded Alex Gunn Architecture to provide homeowners with a thoughtful, personal and approachable architectural service.
My aim is simple: to make good architecture accessible. Whether you're considering a rear extension, loft conversion, full refurbishment or simply exploring the possibilities for your home, I believe the process should feel collaborative, understandable and enjoyable from the very first conversation. Every project begins by listening carefully to how you live and what you hope your home can become.
Outside of practice, I spend much of my time sketching buildings, exploring London's architecture and gardens, travelling, and studying the history of design. I play music, lift weights and am learning Latin, and love to go surfing when I get the time. I have a strong belief that 'how you do anything is how you do everything' and those interests continue to shape my work and remind me that architecture is never just about constructing buildings it is about creating places that people genuinely enjoy living in.
Good architecture begins with a good conversation. If you're thinking about your own project, I'd be delighted to hear your ideas.
